This guy, Peter LeClair, is my guitar teacher. He's been teaching my sons for about two years, give or take, and this summer I decided that life was getting short and I wanted to learn how to play guitar, too.

My father's day present to myself, seven years ago, was an acoustic guitar -- a Dean solid-top dreadnought -- that I had no idea how to play. After 40 years of simply loving the sound of a guitar, I decided I needed to be able to get around to the other side of the thing.
I took a few lessons, but mostly self taught, and now I play well enough to lead praise and worship, mangle Dylan and The Band, and even noodle out a song or two of my own.
My son -- who took guitar as an elective for three years in middle school -- has far surpassed me, but I am content. The guitar goes with us camping, on vacation and is pulled out regularly so we all can sit around and sing.
You will not regret setting out on this. Two pieces of advice: The learning curve for guitar is oddly shaped -- commit for six months and you will see results, despite early discouragement. And start now working on calluses. I used to carry around a broken piece of brick paver and work that with my fingers.

I've got a bit of a headstart, in some ways. I used to play both piano and saxophone, well enough to teach both of them, so in many ways the basics of chords and nuances of playing music itself are all there and I can just concentrate on learning guitar--and getting my middle-aged fingers to cooperate.
I also find that I enjoy just playing around with it, maybe because I can sit out on the desk enjoying the evening with it, or sit on the couch playing while the TVs on.
So when Peter teaches me a blues progression in A, I spend a lot of time goofing around, trying to figure out how many different things I can with what little I know. Basically, I'm having fun.
I bought myself an acoustic guitar this year and have played it nearly every day since. I'm not taking formal lessons, but I love it and don't know why I waited until I'm 50 to do this. As you say, life's too short. Have fun.
