Just a wild guess.
Anyway, although I think just about every writer on earth has put in their 2 cents or so on the Amazon-MacMillan kerfluffle, I thought Barry Eisler's was very interesting, here:

Well, I don't have a dog in the Amazon-MacMillan fight since I don't own a Kindle (and have no real desire to own one) and the only books I've had published have been work-for-hire training course text books for my employer... but this did make me recall that I have heard that pre-orders make publishers happy... so I just ordered my copy.
