A Devil's Deal

May 12, 2008
I expect to be a little scarce this week, so let me give you this to think about.

The devil shows up at your door and makes you a couple of offers.

1. He'll give you $1,000,000 a year, no strings attached, if you give up writing entirely.

Or...

2. You can make $125,000 a year writing anything BUT fiction.

Do you take either of these deals?

Cheers,
Mark Terry

The million dollars--is that taxable income?

Deal #1.

Take the money, TEACH writing. Become a filmmaker. Garden. Take up painting. Do something else with my creativity.

Door #2 is out, because non-fic writing is excruciatingly difficult for me.

Door #1, ditto what Erica said. Except first I'd try to trick the devil by "typing" fiction instead of "writing" it.

I'd take the first offer in a second. I need $1,000,000 a year more than the world needs my writing. And so does my family. Besides, I majored in art for a year. I could buy a lot of watercolors with $1,000,000.

No to both. Ouch, but no. The happiest I've ever been was when I was living hand-to-mouth.

As wonderful as expository writing is, high drama is the province of fiction alone.

I'm with Stephen. I'd rather be poor than deal with the devil.

"What profiteth a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul?"

The devil's a tricky fucker. It's best to walk away from any of his deals.

I read the post and immediately said I'd take #1. Then I started to feel sick. I'm surprised at myself, but I wouldn't take either deal. I even tried to convince myself, but to no avail.

I'll remember this the next time I feel like the writing's making me crazy. "No worries, you were crazy before. Remember the million-dollar deal?"
